Strangers, and how to ask

Most of my favourite portraits are of people I’d known for ninety seconds. The trick isn’t a trick — it’s just telling the truth: I think you have a good face, can I make a picture?

Half say no, and that’s fine. The ones who say yes give you something you could never stage: the small bravery of being looked at.
